Nolan ra Sinjaria is not only one of the fierce elite warrior group called Talions, he is a member of the Justice subgroup tasked with tracking, judging, and passing sentence on criminals in nearly every corner of the Shattered Empire. Though fully committed to his duties, Nolan’s past looms heavily over him and might shape not only his own future, but that of entire kingdoms.I completely adored this when I first read it a couple years ago, and it remains my favorite fantasy novel after my second visit. There is less impact upon reread because the twists aren’t as flooring, but it’s equally nice to notice all the little clues laid in throughout the book when going through it again.
The book isn’t perfect and there are several genre cliches employed, but as always it’s the way those cliched elements are used that really matters. Here they’re woven together wonderfully with a handful of complex, diverse characters, a suspenseful atmosphere with good surprises, and Stackpole’s usual incredible word building. Nolan’s world, its history, and the specific role of the Talions is all fascinating and adds considerable depth to the action of the story (of which there is plenty). There seem to be a few minor internal inconsistencies here and there, but they don’t detract from the enjoyment of the story the framework supports.
Stackpole is an expert at providing vivd detail without bogging the pace down, and everything from the landscapes to characters to battles is extremely easy to visualize. This increases immersion exponentially and contributes to the compelling nature of Nolan’s adventures. It also enhances the perception of time and space, which is particularly important because of the parallel storytelling employed here. It’s done flawlessly.
The other key, which is always a big point with me, is that the plot is driven as much or more so by character as it is by action and events. There are various agendas and personalities in opposition and the story properly centers around individual feelings and reactions to what’s happening in around the characters and how their agendas align or conflict. Most importantly, the main characters are strong and smart but not infallible, which allows readers to admire and cheer for them while still empathizing with their struggles.
I found Talion: Revenant to be a fantastic read initially and am pleased to say it held up well the second time through. Highly recommended.

Talion Revenant edition by Michael A Stackpole Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I’m a sucker for fantastic world-building, I’ll admit it. Stackpole is a master at creating the deeply detailed world of the Talions and the magic the Justices wield. This doesn’t mean that the prose is in any way slowed down by lengthy descriptions, rather the opposite. This attention to a detail ensures the reader a textured and mesmerizing picture. One of my favorite scenes is when Nolan goes through the Shar Ritual. You’d think Stackpole went through it himself!
All this marvelous world-building sets the stage for an intriguing set of characters who are crafted with the same depth and care. There are your standard “bad guys,” of course, but if readers enjoy a character-rich story, this won’t disappoint. The main characters and supporting cast are well-developed and consistent, with unique voices and a few surprises. Nolan is a great protagonist who struggles to fulfill his destiny. He’s imperfect, likeable, and relatable.
On top of all that, the plot holds together well with a number of twists at the end. Stackpole hints repeatedly at the hidden full story that waits in the wings, and then he slowly draws aside the curtain. I was hooked early. The book basically covers Nolan’s physical journey from novice to skilled Justice as well as his emotional/spiritual journey from childhood to manhood. The reader follows along on both.
The only challenge is that there isn’t a sequel (that I could find) and the book is begging for one. I highly recommend this read.
I was introduced to Michael A Stackpole through the world of star wars before Disney bought it and decided to throw all his hard work and the work of others under the Disney bus and make it legends. When a good friend of mine said Stackpole had written other books and that this was really good I raced to find a copy. Fast forward 15 years and when I found out that this book was released in ebook and that Stackpole had promised to write a new book in the series once he reached 5,000 ebooks sold I couldn't hold myself back from buying a copy. Also my wife didn't want to read the original copy because she prefers books in ebook that she can read on her tablet or phone. So buying this I can see that its every bit as good as the original. The story is fast paced keeps you intrigued and engaged from page to page. At the end you find a huge plot twist that you never would have seen coming. One of my all time favorite books. My only complaint which isn't dire is that they haven't had this one made into audio format yet. Would love to listen to this one over and over again while going about my day but I'll settle to reading this one over and over again across multiple devices and being able to pass this on to my wife and kids is great too.
